Dr. Susan Atuhairwe

Is a specialist in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Mulago National Referral Hospital with varied experience in patient care, training of various cadres of health professionals including post graduate students, undergraduate students, midwives and other allied health professionals and research. She has good working knowledge and understanding of various pertinent areas with special interest in emergency obstetric care, family planning, infertility and post abortion care. She completed her post graduate training in Obstetrics &Gynaecology at Makerere University in 2010 under the sponsorship of the Madhvani Foundation.

For her master’s research, she investigated the urologic complications among women with advanced cervical cancer at a tertiary referral hospital in Uganda which work was published in the International Journal of Gynecology and Obstetrics. For the last 4 years, the focus of her research has mainly been on 1st trimester post abortion care, contraception and postpartum haemorrhage with successful publications in high impact peer reviewed journals.Under this fellowship, Dr. Atuhairwe’s research interests will be extended to post abortion care in the second trimester. The development of a medical method with misoprostol for 2nd trimester PAC holds the potential to reduce maternal mortality and morbidity. A promotion of successful implementation strategy of safe PAC in Uganda can potentially support task shifting in places where physicians are in shortage or not available. The findings of this project will be used to revise policies, standard care guidelines and curricula for medical and PAC training programmes.
