Prof. Buyinza Mukadasi

Professor Buyinza Mukadasi  is the Director, Directorate of Research and Graduate Training, Makerere University.  He holds a BSc, MSc, PhD in Forest Management from Gadjah Mada University Yogyakarta, Indonesia and several Post-doctoral research trainings at the International Agricultural Centre, Waginengen University (2002-2003), University of Florida, Institute of Agricultural Science (2004), Norwegian University of Life Sciences (2005 – 2007). He has undertaken numerous trainings in courses related to natural resources management and environmental governance. He started his research and academic career as Tutorial Assistants at Gadjah Mada University Indonesia (1993-1996) and Lecturer at Makerere University in 1999, and rose to the rank of Full Professor in 2010.

Teaching
He has won more than 15 competitive research grants as a principal investigator, Co-Principal Investigator or a collaborator. Currently he is the Principal Investigator of Three Institutional research programmes including the Uganda-Sweden bilateral Research project worthy USD$ 40 million, 2015 – 2020; EU-funded INTRA-ACP AFRICA (Euro 2million); Cambridge-African Partnership in Research Excellence (CAPREX) a collaborative research training programme with Cambridge and University of Ghana (USD $2 million); 2016-2018; Project Director of the Makerere-Uganda Virus Research Institute programme on Infection and Immunity, 2.5 million GBP; Carnegie Corporation of New York project focusing on the nurturing and retention of the next generation of academics worthy USD $2 million  for period of 2013 – 2016 and he is the Principal Investigator to the successor Carnegie funded Post-doctoral research grant of US$ 1million for  2017-2019.  As the Director of Research and Graduate Training he is the coordinator of various research capacity building initiatives at Makerere University with support from several development partners. 

Research

Supervision 

He has supervised over 100 graduate students at both Master and Doctorate degree levels in addition to mentoring many of them. He has also examined over 100 Master and PhD theses and has served as an external examiner in many regional and international universities. He is a member of many professional bodies at national and international level.
He has held important positions including being the Chairperson Board of Directors of the National Forestry Authority (2007 – 2014), Chairperson of the Consortium for Advanced Research Training in Africa (CARTA) 2017 – 2020, a member of the Society for Research Administration International since 2010.

His research interests include forest resources economics, ecosystem health and community livelihoods. He has published over 150 scientific journal articles especially in the field of forest management approaches, economics of biodiversity conservation, and environmental impact assessment studies 

He has authored two books in the series of Forest Economics and Community Forestry, has 4 book chapters, more than 55 publications in International Referred journals, more than 70 conference proceedings and has participated in more than 140 conferences/seminars as an organiser or presenter. Professor Buyinza has built a very strong international network of collaborations in research administration.
