RICHARD KWIZERA
THRiVE-2 PhD Fellow

Richard is a medical mycologist and manager of the Translational Research Laboratory at Makerere University College of Health Sciences. He has previously been involved in translational research studying point of care testing for cryptococcal infections in HIV; the frequent presence of detectable Aspergillus antibodies for the diagnosis of Allergic Broncho Pulmonary Aspergillosis in Asthma and rapid detection of Cerebrospinal Fluid Sterilization (CSF) sterility in HIV/cryptococcal co-infection.

Richard  has over 20 publications in peer-reviewed journals. For the future, Richard envisions setting up and leading a dedicated reference laboratory for studying fungi in Uganda to support research studies and clinical care in the region while building local capacity.

His background is mainly laboratory based. He has a bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Laboratory Technology and a master’s degree in Biomedical Laboratory Sciences and Management from Makerere University. He also has a master’s degree in Medical Mycology from the University of Manchester- UK. Richard undertook his PhD studies at Makerere University between 2017 and 2021 and his research characterized chronic and allergic pulmonary fungal infections among Ugandans with severe asthma. The results suggest that fungal asthma is a significant problem among Ugandans with asthma and should be particularly considered in individuals who remain uncontrolled despite optimal standard of care for asthma. He is awaiting his PhD defense.
