Opportunities have been made available for collaborative research across institutions in East Africa and between the latter and those in the UK. Pump priming grants and mini-sabbaticals, joint PhD and post-doctoral supervision, joint appointments and joint academic programs all have provide conducive environments and opportunities for collaborative research.
KCMC & MakCHS Team up to Start a Paediatric Network
A pump-priming award has been made to Professors Raimos Olomi and Sarah Kiguli from Kilimanjaro Christian Medical College (KCMC) and Makerere University respectively to start a network of paediatric departments to explore the degree of diversity in bacterial disease in two paediatric departments in Uganda (Mulago and Mbale hospitals) and two in Tanzania(KCMC and Teule Hospital). With additional support from WHO it is hoped to provide important surveillance data on bacterial disease and susceptibility to commonly used antibiotics.
A second pump priming award was made to Dr Rachel Manongi at KCMC in order to develop a new collaboration with researchers from London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) and the KEMRI-Wellcome Trust unit in Nairobi who have expertise in Geographical Information Systems (GIS). The objective is to analyze paediatric hospital admission data linked to census and other data to estimate the degree of excess mortality associated with poor access to hospitalservices for children
