Dr. David Kateete a THRiVE postdoctoral fellow wins a National Institutes of Health/FOGARTY INTERNATIONAL CENTER grant . The project titled: ‘Nurturing Genomics and BioinformaticsResearch Capacity in Africa (Breca)’ will run for five years under grant number 1U2RTW010672-01.
Public Health Relevance: The advent of high-throughput sequencing technologies that yield huge amounts of data has rendered bioinformatics expertise relevant in clinical and biomedical research. BRecA provides quality local bioinformatics training programs that will contribute to improved health of African human communities.
Profile:
David Kateete is a fulltime faculty in the Dept. of Medical Microbiology, Makerere University College of Health Sciences. His research interests are “Tuberculosis” and “Hospital Acquired Infections” with a focus on understanding pathogen biology, host-pathogen interactions and drug resistance mechanisms. The goal is to generate knowledge that may translate into new treatments for these devastating, often neglected diseases in Africa. He trained in state of the art research laboratories across borders; for instance, Medicinal Enzymology in Professor Michael Gelb’s laboratory at the University of Washington; and recently, Functional Genomics/Bioinformatics in Dr. Jessica Kissinger’s and Dr. Fred Quinn’s laboratories at the University of Georgia. During the same period, he also studied Statistical Genetics/Genomics with Professor Chris Whalen, The University of Georgia.
