Gerald Mboowa a THRiVE PhD fellow successfully defended his PhD before a fully packed videoconference room on 24 August 2019 at the Makerere University College of Health Sciences. Gerald is one of the sixteen PhD fellows supported by THRiVE and his research has been on “Functional Host-Genetic Loci associated with Paediatric HIV-disease progression in Uganda and Botswana”. Gerald’s research utilised HIV infected children from Uganda and Botswana to identify the genetic causes of rapid and long-term HIV-disease progression in children. This work is offering potential insights into the advancement of new HIV therapeutic approaches and vaccine development.
Gerald’s completion of his PhD is one of THRiVE’s commitment to its vision of being a leading Network of Excellence in building Health Research Capacity in Africa
