Dear Reader,
This year, 2019, marks half a century since that incredible feat when the first astronauts landed on the moon. This happened because a group of thinkers (scientists, technocrats, policy makers and politicians) in the USA had a vision
and planned how to achieve it. Similarly, Africa has a vision. Agenda 2063 which is the master-plan for transforming Africa into the global powerhouse of the future is founded on the African Union vision of “An integrated, prosperous and peaceful Africa, driven by its own citizens and representing a dynamic force in the international arena.” Likewise, in THRiVE we have a vision and we believe that success is possible for everyone who has confidence in him- or her-self, has the can-do
mentality, driven by the inner force of self-determination, giving a free rein to one’s talents and ambitions

THRiVE nurtures people who are committed to changing the world through worldclass research with potential to improve population health and well-being of society. The thought about Malala Yousafzai who won a Nobel Peace Prize at age 17 is very motivating. THRiVE is in its 3rd year of its second 5-year grant cycle.
We await to learn of exciting new findings from the research conducted by our PhD and postdoctoral fellows, and others. From their rigorous research experiences the trainees begin to plan for a future that bridges their actions to their dreams. There may be striking innovations resulting from thinking outside the box and may pave the way for creative ways in health care delivery. As fellows strive to make the best of a science career; it is worth remembering that a research career that reaches research excellence is a marathon and not a sprint and there may be several setbacks along the way. Therefore, I welcome you all to this edition of THRiVE News; we have interesting experiences and achievements as shared by our fellows.
