World Kidney Day (WKD) is the most widely celebrated event focused on kidney health across the globe. It’s also an occasion to raise awareness about the dangers of kidney disease and to send a clear message to the general public that Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is common, harmful and treatable. This year’s theme is focused on ‘Living Well with Kidney Disease.’
Kidneys age, just like you. On top of natural aging, many conditions which damage the kidneys are more common in older people including diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease. This is important because CKD increases the risk of heart attack and stroke, and in some cases can progress to kidney failure requiring dialysis or transplantation.
However, the good news is that you can manage complications of CKD and other medical conditions you may have (like diabetes), which will help you live longer and live better.
